The back yard of Mallet.

Byrd Hall is located behind the President's Mansion on the University of Alabama campus in Tuscaloosa, Al. It is named for Mable Byrd, and was originally a women's dormitory. Blueprints for Byrd Hall are dated September 1946, so the Hall was likely completed in 1948. Mallet Assembly moved to Byrd Hall in 1972; we previously resided in Sommerville Hall in 1971, and in Mallet Hall prior to that.

The first floor of Byrd Hall has a kitchen, drawing (living) room, library/computer lab, and a number of single and double rooms. The Board of Governors Chairman lives in room 105, which is actually the four southern rooms on the east wing, which includes a bedroom, living room, kitchen and study (plus a bathroom). The Professor in Residence lives in room 100, which is actually three rooms: a living room, kitchen, and bedroom (plus a bathroom).

The first floor is occupied by upperclassmen predominantly; freshmen and additional upperclassmen live on the second and third floors. This is because of Mallet's system of seniority, in which private rooms can be earned based on the number of semesters and credit hours earned while living at Mallet.

Each room on the first floor either has a private bathroom, or a bathroom shared with one adjacent room. First floor rooms are reserved for upperclassmen who have seniority based on a system that factors in previous room, number of semesters at Mallet, and number of credit hours earned at the University. Freshmen and additional upperclassmen occupy rooms on the second and third floors, which have communal bathrooms. Traditionally, only one person lives in each first floor room. This is necessary in rooms 102, 116, 117, 118, 119, and 120 because these rooms are so small. They are called "closet rooms" by Malleteers, and "single rooms" by ResLife. The other rooms, while large enough for two people, only usually have one occupant (who pays for the private room) as not many Juniors, Seniors, or Graduate students will put up with having a roommate in a dorm (i.e., this is one of the things that keeps Malleteers in Mallet and not in Apartments).

The second and third floors of Byrd Hall are laid out almost identically. The second floor has a study room in 225. This features desks, chairs, reference books, and a smaller computer lab than that of the downstairs computer lab. It is always quiet. The second and third floors both have communal restrooms (rm 227/327) and shower rooms (rm 228/328). They also have kitchens with a sink, stove, microwave, and refrigerator. (Each bedroom also comes with a micro fridge and microwave). Additionally, the Watters Closet, our Internet wiring closet, is located on the second floor. The wiring is secured behind the Impenetrable Psychedelic Master Lock.
